Raise your hand if you thought I forgot about this series. Last year, while sipping wine on the deck one afternoon after work and feeling especially grateful for the space Jon and I had created, I decided to start a blog series highlighting women I admire and what makes their space feel like theirs. The home tour is nothing new. In our visual world, Domino, Apartment Therapy and Design*Sponge can do this thing way better than I can. But, I think our homes are worth sharing and there is more to them than just decor. The way they function, our favorite pastimes and storied keepsakes are part of who we are. So, Feels Like Home is back with my friends Hilary and Kyle and their Oakland, California loft. Hilary and I became friends years and years ago in Athens, Georgia and if there is one thing Hilary can do, it’s create an inviting space. Her California home is just as I expected: light, cozy and thoughtful. Come see!
Tell us a little about yourself!
My husband Kyle and I moved from Athens, Georgia to the San Francisco Bay Area last year. We live in a loft in Oakland and commute into the city for work. I’m really interested in brand strategy and work for an advertising agency called Essence, and Kyle works at a financial tech startup. We’re both in this really fun phase of curiosity and wanting to learn new things, so outside of work we’re usually reading or taking courses. I’m really into houseplants and cooking, and in general we just love spending time at home. It recharges us.
How long have you lived in your current home?
Who lives there with you?
My husband, Kyle.
Describe your home’s style in 3 words
Modern, honest, architectural
What is your favorite room/space in your home? Why?
We spend all of our time in the main living space on the lower level of the loft. There’s wonderful light, and we spend hours on the weekend just relaxing with coffee or a meal in that room. Do you know that feeling after a yoga class when you feel very relaxed but also very energized? This space feels like that to me.
What is your most cherished piece? Does it have a story?
So many of our pieces have stories which is what I love about our home, but I think my favorite piece is the gray ladder my younger brother made for me as a wedding gift. I just love that he made it, and he was only 16 at the time, so it was special to me that he took time to build us something. He’s wonderful.
What is the one thing that makes your space feel like home?
We’ve created a place where we can be ourselves.
What is your favorite way to relax at home?
On the weekends we’ll cook a delicious meal at a weird time of day, like 3pm. I don’t know why, I’ve just been enjoying that so much!
House Plants or Fresh Flowers? Houseplants
Driveway or Sidewalk? Sidewalk
Tidy or “Lived In”? Tidy
Breakfast Bar or Kitchen Table? I love a sprawling kitchen table, but in this home we have a breakfast bar. We actually eat most of our meals in the living room – lately we’ve been throwing out an old flatweave rug and having our meals picnic style since we don’t have a coffee table.
Modern or Traditional? Modern
Bed Made or Unmade? Oh I love when my bed is made, but its almost always unmade.
TV or Radio? TV
Front Porch or Back Deck? Front porch. My parents spend an hour on their front porch every morning drinking coffee before work.. how sweet is that?!
Guilty pleasure: The Office. We’ve watched an episode a day for about four years.
